Obituary

Margery B. Morano

December 17, 2021

Margery B. Morano, Clarks Green, died Friday, Dec. 17, surrounded by her family at the home of her daughter, Christa, with whom she resided. She was the widow of the late Attorney John A. Morano Sr., who died in 2009.

Born on April 14, 1928, in Green Ridge, she was the only child of the late Edgar and Loretta Gordon Burns. Margery was a graduate of Marywood Seminary and Marymount College, Tarrytown, N.Y., where she earned her B.A. in primary education. She was a founding member of St. Gregory's Parish, Clarks Green. She was also a member of the Marywood Seminary Alumnae Association, the UNICO Woman's Auxiliary, the St. Joseph's Center Auxiliary, the Lackawanna Lawyer's Auxiliary, and the Country Club of Scranton.

Margery is survived by two sons, Atty. John Jr. and wife, Tammy, RN, Waverly; and Atty. Jerry and wife, Atty. Jessica, Avondale; three daughters, Katheryn Vassil and husband, Michael, Dalton; Christa LaBelle, RN, CCM, and husband, Todd, Waverly; and Atty. Alyssa Goldberg and husband, Andrew, Clarks Green; as well as 12 grandsons and four granddaughters.

Margery reared six children and helped rear her 16 grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as "Gammy." She was truly a saint for having the patience to endure the many trials and tribulations she confronted. She was particularly well known for her famous cinnamon toast – often noting that her grandkids would not misbehave if they had their stomachs full. She was generous, kind, caring, and – most of all – loving. She always considered other people's interests before her own and did so without ever complaining. She epitomized motherhood.

In addition to being a mother, Margery served in many other roles, including teacher, as well as personal typist, paralegal and chauffer to John, her loving husband of more than 50 years. She enjoyed yearly trips with John and would fondly reminisce about the many countries to which they traveled. Margery always looked forward to family reunions every summer in Ocean City, Md. Further, Margery eagerly anticipated her yearly trips to New York City to see Broadway shows.

In addition, Margery was a member of the Country Club of Scranton for 75 years, and she would find any excuse to go to "the Club" to entertain. She frequently reminded her children of their Irish heritage by playing Irish records and by recounting stories about her relatives, especially her father. She will be remembered fondly for her deep and profound faith in Catholicism which she shared with her children and grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Traditional Home Health and Hospice as well as her private caregivers, Maryjule and Mary, for their compassionate care for Margery.

She was preceded in death by her son, Edgar, who died Oct. 14 of this year.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, Dec. 28, with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in the Church of St. Gregory, Clarks Green. She will be interred in her family plot in Cathedral Cemetery. Friends are invited to call Tuesday, from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. at the Church of St. Gregory, 330 North Abington Road, Clarks Green.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Margery's name to St. Joseph Center, 2010 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509 . Arrangements by the Morell-LaBelle Funeral Home.
