Obituary

Mariel Consagra

May 27, 2022

You may shed tears that she has passed or you may smile because she has lived. And live, she did. On May 27, 2022, Mariel Consagra took her last breath and left our world peacefully at home with her loving and devoted husband, Chuck, by her side.

Born in Scranton, Nov. 11, 1946, the only child of J. Emmett Hart and Mary Gibbons Hart, she was a graduate of St. Paul's High School and obtained both her bachelor's and master's degrees in special education and English from Marywood University. Every minute Mariel spent on earth was lived to the absolute fullest and without regret. She is best known for her 35 years with the Scranton School District as everyone's beloved first grade teacher at Robert Morris Elementary School in the Green Ridge section of Scranton. She continued her teaching career for 19 years as a faculty member of the education department at Keystone College. She spent years as a Virtus trainer for the Diocese of Scranton and offered her services as a standardized patient for Commonwealth Medical School. She was a frequent lector for St. Ann's Church in Scranton, Pa. It is said, "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." Mariel knew how to make a living, but moreover her unwavering giving created a life.

Surviving are her husband, Charles Louis Consagra, Esq.; her daughter, Tara Hetsko and husband, Eric, Scranton, Pa.; her daughter, Casey Traver and husband, Derek, Dallas, Pa.; granddaughter, Allie Pliska, Pittston, Pa.; grandson, Jet Traver, Dallas, Pa.; best friend and "sister," Margaret McMullen, Scranton, Pa. Also surviving are all those whose life she touched in the way only Mariel could have done. "Though she be but little, she was fierce."

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 3, at 10 a.m. at St. Ann's Basilica, 1233 St. Ann's St., Scranton, followed immediately by intermant at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Elmhurst.

Friends and loved ones may call Thursday, June 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Morell-LaBelle Funeral Home, 301 Chestnut St., Dunmore. Please feel free to wear your brightest colors as Mariel always said she hoped people would celebrate her out loud and in color!

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Griffin Pond Animal Shelter located at 967 Griffin Pond Road, South Abington Twp., PA 18411 .
