Obituary

Mary Theresa Gatto Cantafio, 96, of Dunmore, passed away peacefully January 27, 2023 in her home surrounded by her loving family under the care of Hospice of the Sacred Heart. She was the last remaining member of that Gatto and Cantafio generation.

She was the wife of Louis J. Cantafio and they shared 52 years of marriage until his passing in 1999.

She was the daughter of James and Concetta Fontanella Gatto.  She attended Dunmore schools and was a devout Catholic and lifetime member of Saint Anthony of Padua Church.  Having a special devotion to Saint Ann, she attended the Saint Ann Novena since she was 11 years old.

Mary was a fulltime mom and homemaker raising four children and her home was always open to nieces, nephews and neighborhood children to whom she was always willing to lend a helping hand.  She was a proud and devoted grandmother and great-grandmother. Affectionately known as GG to Olivia, Natalie, Luke and Alex with whom she shared a special and cherished bond.

She is survived by son, Vincent, two daughters, Pauline Randolph of Bangor, PA and Concetta and husband Bob Toman, who were also her loving caregivers and daughter-in-law, JoAnn Cantafio, all of Dunmore, PA.  She was a loving grandmother to Tony and wife Jamie Cantafio, Lisa and husband Matt Reagle, Christopher Cantafio and Jarred Randolph. She was also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and great nephews.  Mary's family goes far beyond biological ties as everyone who came into her life became a special part of her extended family.  She will be greatly missed by many.

In addition to her husband, Louis, she was preceded in death by grandson, Robert Louis Toman, son Anthony 'Taps' Cantafio, son in law, Wayne Randolph, brothers Vincent 'Shampy', Louis and Joseph Gatto and sisters Rose Steffin and Jennie Nicosia.

Mary's family would like to recognize her amazing Hospice core team of Maria, Melissa, Sarah, and Amy as well as caregivers Lori and Kim.  They became family to Mary and their compassion and comfort enabled Mary to remain in her home which was so very important to her.  Mary's family is forever grateful to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
