Obituary

Mary Kay Jordan of Dunmore passed away peacefully at Marywood Heights on Wednesday, August 21st. Mary Kay was the twin sister of Thomas T. Jordan, Scranton, and the sister of the late Dr. William P. Jordan, Stroudsburg.  Mary Kay and her twin were nearing their 83rd birthday together this upcoming fall.

Born November 10, 1941, the daughter of the late William J. and Angela (Moran) Jordan, Mary Kay was raised in Olyphant, Pennsylvania.  With Angela and William both working hard outside of the house to keep their family afloat in the late 1950s and 1960s, Mary Kay became the family manager taking care of the household chores, her two brothers, and other aunts and uncles that lived in the Olyphant neighborhood. The care giving role was natural to Mary Kay when family or friends were in need, including in the late 1980s when she moved both of her elderly parents into her house so she could serve as their primary caretaker.

Mary Kay received both her Bachelor of Science and Master's of Science in Elementary Education from Marywood University.  In 1964 Mary Kay embarked on a 32-year elementary teaching career which began in Binghamton, New York, before accepting a teaching position in the Scranton School District in 1968.  Her career in Scranton started at the former Hamilton School in the city's west side section before landing at her last and favorite professional destination, the Robert Morris School in Green Ridge.  Teaching 2nd grade at Robert Morris was the highlight of Mary Kay's career, especially getting the opportunity to teach her nephews Tommy and Peter.  Mary Kay truly loved teaching and working with young children, and will be remembered as a gentle, caring, and compassionate educator who helped countless students and parents.

Mary Kay was a selfless and devoted sister and aunt.  Mary Kay's happiest of times were spent with her brothers Billy and Tom, her sister in laws Barbara and Nancy, her seven nieces and nephews, and her ten great nieces and nephews.  She treated Dr. Bill and Tom's children as if they were her own and never missed any of their birthdays or life milestones.

Mary Kay is also survived by her niece Kathleen (Jordan) Linscott and husband Ben of Eagle CO, and nephews Michael Jordan and wife Hilary of Charlotte, VT; Timothy Jordan and wife Jennifer of Stephens City, VA; Brian Jordan, Esq. and wife Meghan of Nazareth, PA; Thomas Jordan, M.D. and wife Caroline of Newton Ransom, PA; Christopher Jordan and wife Courtney of Norwalk, CT; Peter Jordan, Ed.D. and wife Kathleen of Scranton, PA; and ten grand nieces and nephews.

Mary Kay's family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation and thank you to the nurses and staff of both Marywood Heights and The Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their kind and compassionate care of Mary Kay.

Mary Kay was a devout catholic and a faithful parishioner of St. Paul's Church.  A visitation will be held at 9:30am on Thursday, August 29th at St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Avenue, Scranton.  A funeral ceremony will follow the visitation at 11:00am and a burial service will take place at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Olyphant, after the funeral ceremony.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Morell-LaBelle funeral home and in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
