Mary Grace Holmes McHale, 90, of Scranton, died peacefully on July 20, 2024 at Hospice of Sacred Heart in Dunmore, PA surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Robert McHale, her son Michael McHale, grandson Conor McHale and son in law Christopher Lavelle. Born in the Nativity section of Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Willard and Agnes Holmes.  After graduating from South Catholic High School, she became an employee at Prudential Insurance Company.  In 1953 she married the love of her life Bob, they settled in the Green Ridge section where they raised their eight children. Mary Grace had active roles in her church serving on Mother's Club, Altar Rosary and IHM Prayer groups. She volunteered at her children's schools and was also Secretary at St. Clare's school and Marywood College Art Department.  Mary Grace enjoyed traveling to visit her out-of-town children. She cherished summers locally at Lake Hideaway, Crystal Lake, and trips to Avalon, NJ. Mary Grace treasured being surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren.  She was an avid reader, poetry writer and was the matriarch to her large extended family, making each person she touched feel special.  Her wisdom and courage were inspiring to those around her, creating lifelong friendships she had for nearly fifty years.  She filled a room with joy, gave herself to the service of others, and was the definition of resilience.  She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by all. Surviving are her children, Cathy Lavelle, Scranton; Karen Graham and husband Larry of Alexandria, Va; Maureen Philbin and husband John of Fairfield, Ct; Patrick and wife Mari of Fairfield, Ct; Mark McHale son of Dunmore, PA and Alison Lewis McHale, daughter in law of Scranton; Margie Donohue and husband Thomas of Fairfield, Ct; Amie McMullen and husband Darin of Haverford, Pa; and Mary Grace McHale, wife of son Michael, Philadelphia, Pa. She is also survived by her sister, Sister Sarah Ann Holmes, IHM, Scranton, PA.  Mary Grace has twenty grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She also adored her extended Holmes and McHale family. In addition to her husband and son, Mary Grace was also preceded in death by her brothers Paul, Walter, Crane and Michael Holmes whom she loved very much.  The funeral Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11am on Friday, July 26, 2024 at St. Clare Church, 2251 N. Washington Ave., Scranton, Pa.  Relatives and friends are invited to a public visitation preceding the Mass from 9:30–10:45am at the church.  Interment to follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton, Pa.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Sacred Heart, Dunmore, Pa.
