Obituary

January 31, 2021 Stanley "Stashiu" Joseph Johnston, Dunmore, went to his eternal rest on Sunday, January 31st. He died on the feast of St. John Bosco, who was the patron saint of orphan boys - providential as Stan spent his entire childhood in religious orphanages run by Polish and Ukrainian Sisters. Born April 30,1949, Stanley would build a deep devotion to religious life in his early years. He spoke several foreign languages - Polish, Ukrainian, Russian predominantly. As a young man, he fostered a great devotion to the Catholic faith, desiring to become a Franciscan friar one day. As a young adult, Stan spent most of his years working in monasteries throughout the country, performing servant-like positions, such as dishwashing, cleaning, and other simple, humble tasks. Although Stan's true desire was to enter into a Franciscan order, this was not part of God's plan. Stan would write hundreds of letters seeking to be accepted into a monastery. Stan had a beautiful monastic singing voice. He could frequently be heard singing the Mass in Polish, Russian and Ukrainian. Prior to coming to the Dunmore community, he spent many years traveling from city to city with no permanent home or family. In 2014, Stan would find his true home at Building the Kingdom of God, 200 E. Drinker St., where Kim and Joe Marchese would accept him and love him as family. Soon to become a family member to everyone at Building the Kingdom of God, he also met many friends who loved him at Fidelity Bank where he would enjoy his morning coffee and free pens. Stan established his Assisi house in his second-floor apartment, and all who entered, experienced his love and prayer life. A dear friend provided Stan with an authentic Franciscan Friar habit for his burial, and he kept it in his room for the day that he would be a true Franciscan in the eyes of God. Stan spent most of his days meeting and greeting so many with simplicity, joy, and love as an innocent child. He made frequent bus excursions, and loved to hang out at the COLTS bus station, meeting many friends. He would frequent the Bucktown Diner, sharing smiles and laughs with the staff and customers. Those close to Stan would like to express special thanks to the Dunmore community, the Fidelity Bank, and the LIFE Geisinger program where he spent his past two years. There, he was accepted as family and was provided outstanding support and medical care, especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic. LIFE Geisinger worked especially hard in home visits and meals. Stan loved the Eastern rite of the Catholic Church, due to the sisters who raised him. Most recently, he attended St. Ann Maronite Church. Thank you to Dr. Carol and Anthony who brought him to liturgy. On a final note, to the folks at the Fidelity Bank, we know where all your pens are! Stan, you were loved, you were our family, and will be forever missed by Elaine, (Lambchop) Angela, (Hamburger) Patty, Liz, Janet, Diane, Kimmy, Joseph and the Kingdom Family. Final funeral preparations will be made by the Morell-LaBelle Funeral Home, 301 Chestnut St., Dunmore. Donations for Stan's funeral arrangements may be sent to the Stan Johnston Memorial Fund, c/o Fidelity Bank, 101 N. Blakely St., Dunmore, 18512. Any remaining funds will be donated to the Poor Clare Nuns in Stan's name. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday 10:00am at St. Thomas Moore Church 116 Theodore St., Scranton Interment Cathedral cemetery. Those planning on attending the Mass are asked to go directly to the Church
